Companion parrot (Birds)

A companion parrot is a parrot kept as a pet that interacts abundantly with its human counterpart. Generally, most species of parrots can make excellent companions.
Parrots can be very rewarding pets to the right owners due to their intelligence and desire to interact with people. Many parrots are very affectionate, even cuddly with trusted people, and constantly require much attention from their owners. Some owners successfully use well-behaved parrots as therapy animals.

Types of Parrots
There are as many as approximately 350 Parrot species and subspecies. The ten most popular Parrot species are:

Sun Conure

The Sun Conures make great companions. With a bit of love, proper training, and socialization, these birds are sure to brighten the homes and lives of those who choose to keep them. Colorful and intelligent, these birds have an inherent playful and affectionate nature blended with charming personalities. Sun Conures are very social birds and may not be the best choice for those with little time to spend with a pet. If they don’t receive attention for long hours or feel bored and lonely, many Sun Conures become screamers, and some even resort to destructive behavior.

Blue Crowned Conure

Blue Crown Conures are exceptional. They are pretty friendly, calm, playful, inquisitive, and affectionate. Biting is usually not a problem with the lovable Blue Crowns. They tend to be less nippy than other species of parrot. They can speak with a certain amount of clarity and learn to speak several different words and/or phrases.
Their intelligence enables them to learn quickly, and they can be taught to perform several tricks, such as: sticking out their tongue, waving their foot, kissing, etc. Head scratching and feather preening are necessary for a pet Blue Crown Conure. These highly social birds thrive with daily attention. In turn, they will reward you with their companionship.

Nanday Conure

The Nanday Conure is easy to keep and makes an excellent pet for both the experienced bird owner and the beginner. A Nanday Conure is otherwise very adaptable and outgoing. It gets used to its owners quickly. An untrained Nanday Conure is challenging to control. It may become embarrassing in front of guests.
The Nanday Conure is known to be noisy in the early mornings and afternoon, as well as any time they are startled; however, they are very adaptable and outgoing and get used to their owners and keepers quickly. They will bond with one person or territory and can be pretty destructive if made unhappy due to inadequate socialization and stimulation. It should be noted that Conures like the Nanday often sleep on their backs. This could be alarming for a beginner who is not expecting it!

Green Cheeked Conure

A Green Cheek Conure is intelligent and playful. It makes a beautiful pet. A green cheek Conure is very sweet-natured and can be easily trained to talk. It has such a tiny voice that usually only the owner can understand. A Green Cheek Conure does not whistle. It generally repeats a few words and everyday household noises.
A Green Cheek Conure can be trained to go to the bathroom in particular areas when it is out of the cage. Owing to its quiet nature, the Green Cheek Conure is the perfect choice as an apartment bird. Some may be noisier than the rest, but it is the quietest bird in the parrot family.

Dusky Headed Conure

Unlike the rest of the Conure family, the Dusky Headed Conures are quieter ones out there with calm nature.
The Dusky Headed Conure is not as demanding as the rest of its species. It is relatively quiet and sweet and loving-natured. This is why they would make great pets for families with kids.
They are found mainly in South America near the Amazon basin. You can find them near forest edges close to a water source.
There is a high chance that if you ever find one in the wild, it will most likely be nibbling clay soil.
These birds tend to do so to gather minerals and nutrients from the soil.

Crimson Bellied Conure

If there were awards for the most mesmerizing parrot in the world, the Crimson Bellied Conure would snatch it right up!
This gorgeous bird is known for its bold colors with shades of green, blue, black, and crimson.
The Crimson Bellied Conures are found in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. They have been classified as a vulnerable species due to the rapid habitat loss.
While they are relatively difficult to find, the Crimson Bellied Conure makes excellent pets.
They are not loud are playful but would prefer to cuddle more. This makes them the perfect pet for someone who wants a companion.

Black-Capped Conure

The Black-Capped Conure, often mistaken for the Black Hooded Conure, is another one of the types of Conure Parrots out there. While its name may sound similar to the Black Hooded Conure, you can quickly tell them apart by the magnificent grey scalloped feathers on their necks. They are mostly found within lowland forests in the Amazon basin or on the Eastern side of the Andes Mountains.

However, similar to the Crimson Bellied Conures, they have been listed as Near Endangered species due to rapid habitat loss. While these birds may not be as exotically colored as the rest of the Conures, they are equally great pets. However, it would be best to keep them preoccupied to stay happy.

Golden Conure

If you are looking for one of the rarest Conure Parrots, the Golden Conure is for you. Their exotic coloring is a sight to behold.

The Golden Conure is bright yellow from top to bottom, with specific hints of green and blue on its wings.

What makes them the most desirable is probably their magnificent appearance, along with their rarity.

They are not easily available as pets and are extremely expensive if bought. However, they’re great pets if you do end up owning one.

They’re extraordinarily playful and friendly but can be very loud.

Jenday Conures

Jenday Conures have wonderful, loving personalities. They make excellent pets (like all Conures) as long as you can deal with some noise every now and then. Jenday Conures are known to be just as sweet as Sun Conures, but usually with a slightly cheaper price tag (since they aren’t considered by many to be “as pretty” as Sun Conures).
The Jenday Conure is a fantastic pet. They are very affectionate and will readily accept attention from anyone. They enjoy being scratched and enjoy having their feathers stroked. It is not uncommon to see this Conure initiate being petted by bending its head forward.
The need to be with their owners is strong and many will climb inside their owner’s shirt. Once there, many will find a cozy spot and peak through a sleeve or the neck opening. These Conures will gladly stay tucked inside your shirt until removed.
